Gin
Gins are basically vodkas, but infused with botanicals to add more flavour. They all contain juniper berries but after that, they can contain a wide variety of flavours, which is why it’s important to have a few to choose from. Enjoying gin is a fine English tradition.
Some of these gins make great G&Ts, some are lovely to sip neat or over ice, but we believe a good dry martini is the perfect showcase for fantastic gin. We’ve priced the cocktails for each gin so you can have the choice and experiment!
All our gins come served in a low rocks glass, over lots of Ice and with the ideal garnish, topped up with Fevertree Tonic (£1.50 extra). If you would prefer it served another way just let us know.
Tanqueray (43.1% £3.40) (Martini Cocktail £8.10)
Dà Mhile Seaweed Gin From the Welsh Dà Mhìle Distillery comes Seaweed Gin, which is made with a variation on their small batch gin. It is then infused with seaweed from the Newquay coast for three weeks to impart a coastal character (and also imparts a very subtly green hue). (42% £3.50) (Martini Cocktail £8.30)
Whitley Neill Handcrafted Dry Gin Superb quality London dry gin made by an independent distillery with 4 generations of family heritage. They base this on African botanicals, including the Baobab Tree and Physalis. The result is a fantastic gin, made in a century old antique copper pot still. Whitley Neill's motto is 'Inspired by Africa, made in England'. (42% £3.50) (Martini Cocktail £8.30)
Xoriguer Gin A cult gin from Mahon, Menorca. Gin has been made on Menorca since the time of the British occupation in the 18th century and Xoriguer commands a devoted following of happy travellers. Unusually, Xoriguer is made in wood-fired pot stills from distilled wine (eau-de-vie) rather than the more usual grain-based distillate, and is rested in American oak barrels before bottling. Cadenheads Old Raj Spiced Gin Produced since 1972 the gin is bottled in Campbeltown. This quality floral gin has a slight yellow tint due to the addition of the saffron. This valuable and rare ingredient is added post distillation. Botanicals include Juniper, Liquorice, Angelica Root, Orris and Cassia Quills amongst others. (46% £3.50) (Martini Cocktail £8.30)
Curio Rock Samphire Gin A quadruple distilled Cornish gin made with locally foraged wild botanicals including rock samphire from the Cornish cliffs and Kombu seaweed sourced by The Cornish Seaweed Company. Martin Miller's Gin This gin is distilled in pot stills and shipped to Iceland, where it is mixed with Icelandic spring water. It is flavoured with Tuscan juniper, cassia bark, angelica, Florentine orris, coriander, Seville citrus peel, nutmeg, cinnamon and liquorice root. (40% £3.50) (Martini Cocktail £8.30)
Saffron Gin Boudier's Saffron Gin is an extraordinary gin which gains its marvellous tawny-orange hue from the addition of saffron! Fantastic. (40% £3.70) (Martini Cocktail £8.70)
Hendrick’s Gin Quirky producer Hendrick’s make their pot-still distilled gin using cucumber as one of the primary botanicals. This makes for a unique, tasty and incredibly refreshing gin. (41.4% £3.70) (Martini Cocktail £8.70)
Hammer & Son Old English Gin Old-timey gin from Hammer & Son, made with 11 botanicals to a recipe from 1783 and distilled in the oldest working pot still in England! It's even presented in an old-timey fashion, in a recycled, wax sealed bottle. (44% £3.70) (Martini Cocktail £8.70)
Tarquin's Handcrafted Cornish Gin An exotic, world spanning botanical basket makes Tarquin's Gin. Orris root from Morocco, green cardamom seeds from Guatemala, cinnamon from Madagascar and Devon violets from... well, from the distiller's garden in Cornwall. This Southwestern Distillery produce small batch Gin, bottle it by hand and send it off into the world, to spread the news that Cornwall is producing some fabulous gin. The Botanist Islay Dry Gin Made by the geniuses at the Bruichladdich whisky distillery, the Islay gin is jam packed with a tasty selection of botanicals big enough to make any botanist swoon. 22 of the 31 botanicals are native to Islay, including wild Islay juniper, giving us a unique taste of the island that's neither a peated nor unpeated whisky. Little Bird London Dry Gin Made using 10 carefully selected botanicals, resulting in a well rounded, citrus-forward London dry gin that goes just splendidly in a classic G&T. A dynamic nose, bustling with grapefruit, followed by a fresh palate of juniper and further citrus, complimented by spicy ginger and coriander. (41.6% £3.80) (Martini Cocktail £8.90)
Wicked Wolf Exmoor made in North Devon using a selection of 11 botanicals - these include juniper, angelica, cardamom, coriander, cubeb, grains of paradise, hibiscus, Kaffir lime leaves, orange peel, lemon peel and lemongrass.(42% £3.80) (Martini Cocktail £8.90)
Brockmans This is a delicious gin from the folks at Brockmans. It’s made with Bulgarian coriander, blueberries and blackberries as well as bittersweet Valencia orange peels. The result is well balanced and full of flavour. (40% £3.80) (Martini Cocktail £8.90)
Warner Edwards Victoria’s Rhubarb Gin Named for the garden in which it originally grew, Victoria's Rhubarb gives this gin its fruity edge. They also add just enough sugar to balance out the acidity from the rhubarb, producing a spirit with plenty of sweetness and subtle, enjoyably sour notes. (40% £3.90) (Martini Cocktail £9.10)
Silent Pool Gin Silent Pool Gin is produced on the Albury Estate in the Surrey Hills, right next to the Silent Pool, a beautiful, mysterious spring-fed lake - what a place to create a gin! The gin itself features 24 botanicals, including kaffir lime, chamomile, local honey and lavender, among others, resulting in a subtly sweet though intricately-balanced tipple. Blackwoods Vintage Dry Gin - Superior Strength Blackwoods Vintage Dry is made with handpicked Shetland botanicals, from juniper to angelica, marsh marigold to the delightfully named sea pink. No. 209 Gin The best gin we've tasted in a very long time, this quintuple-distilled gin has perhaps the best flavour we've ever encountered for a gin martini. 1897 Quinine Gin 1897 Quinine Gin is an exciting, inventive London Dry Gin which has been made using cinchona bark - the natural and traditional source of quinine - as well as cold distilled fresh lemon and grapefruit peels. The cold-distillation captures the notes of citrus and cinchona wonderfully, and compliment the classically-styled botanicals that are also used. Manchester Gin - Signature Manchester Gin was created by Jen Wiggins and Seb Heeley with the help of their copper still Wendy. It began in a tiki bar in the centre of Manchester where two gin lovers found each other whilst surrounded by rum lovers. 12 botanicals are used including fantastic dandelion and burdock root, a nod to their northern childhoods, as well as juniper, ground almond, coriander, angelica and citrus peels. Four Pillars Rare Dry Gin Four Pillars Rare Dry Gin is made in a small distillery in Yarra Valley, Australia. Everything the Four Pillars distillers make is based around their four pillars - the still, the water, the botanicals and love. It's sort of a bit like the four elements of hip hop. Bathtub Gin – Navy Strength This is the navy strength edition of the famous Bathtub Gin from Professor Cornelius Ampleforth. As well as boasting a higher ABV than the original Bathtub Gin, this edition also has a bigger botanical punch thanks to the 'bashing up' (technical term) of the botanicals to release more flavour. Death's Door Gin This is a fine American gin made with organic red winter wheat from Washington Island, Wisconsin. Bottled at higher strength than your average gin, this makes a great martini. We’ve long championed this gin here at the Gas Lamp! (47% £4.70) (Martini Cocktail £10.70)
Elephant Dry Gin is distilled in Germany using 14 botanicals that include some rather unusual but fascinating African ingredients like Baobab, the Buchu plant, Devil's Claw and African Wormwood. Well worth exploring! (45% £4.50) (Martini Cocktail £10.30)
Bobby’s Schiedam Dry Gin Dutch gin which was launched in 2014, Bobby's Schiedam Dry Gin features a recipe inspired by the creator's grandfather, Bobby Alfons. It's made with a combination of local and exotic ingredients, including juniper, clove, lemongrass, cubeb peppers and rosehips. Highlighting the meeting of Dutch and Indonesian flavours in the spirit, Bobby's Schiedam Dry Gin comes in a bottle which harks back to the style of vessel used to hold jenever, with a pattern inspired by Indonesian designs. Conker RNLI Navy Strength Gin The Conker Spirit folks created its RNLI Navy Strength Gin in partnership with the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. It's not just a punchy and delicious Navy Strength gin all the way from sunny Dorset - Conker Spirit are donating £5 to the RNLI for every bottle sold to help support the life-saving work it performs every day! Nikka Coffey Gin Gin from Nikka?! Oh yes, my friends, the folks at Nikka aren't simply just whisky geniuses - they're accomplished gin producers too! Produced in Coffey stills using a base of barley and corn, Nikka Coffey Gin features a selection of enjoyably vibrant botanicals, including amanatsu, kabosu, shikuwasa and yuzu, as well as sansho pepper, among others. FEW Barrel-Aged Gin This is a stunning American gin, made by FEW Spirits in Illinois, USA. It was aged in oak barrels, and the result of this is an increased level of sweetness, complexity and spice. Orkney Gin Company Johnsmas Gin Inspired by the long midsummer days on Orkney, Johnsmas is a highly floral, fragrant and light gin made with a selection of hand-picked botanicals from the island and elsewhere. (41.3% £5.30) (Martini Cocktail £11.90)
Spirit of Hven Organic Gin A top quality, handcrafted gin from the Swedish island of Hven, situated in the Öresund Strait between Denmark and Sweden. It is an organic wheat gin that is both pot distilled and oak matured with botanicals such as juniper, grains of paradise, citrus, Sichuan pepper, aniseed, and guinea pepper. The oak maturation gives this a smooth mouth feel lending itself well for everything from cocktails to sipping. (40% £5.60) (Martini Cocktail £12.50)
Hernö Old Tom Gin From the Swedish Hernö distillers comes a sweet, lip-smacking Old Tom Gin. After distillation, they add a touch of honey and sugar, giving it the classic sweetness you look for in a traditional Old Tom Gin. The cat’s face on the bottle harks back to how Old Tom Gin got its name - the tom cat shaped plaques outside London gin houses from the olden days, where you'd put a coin in the cat's mouth and the bartender would dispense a shot of gin from the cat's paw. Napue Gin The "Adventurous Rye Rye Gentlemen" at the Kyrö Distillery in Isokyrö, Finland produce the small batch Napue Gin using rye grain and the finest botanicals which give off a nose rich in meadow sweet, citrus, cumin and juniper. Monkey 47 Dry Gin An unusual gin from the Black Forest in Germany, Monkey 47 contains a unique ingredient, cranberries! The 47 comes from the number of botanicals that go into this unique gin, and the fact it's bottled at a healthy 47%. (47% £5.80) (Martini Cocktail £12.90)
Ki No Tea – Kyoto Dry Gin This limited edition expression is the result of a partnership with noted tea grower and blender Hori-Shichimeien, which was founded just to the south of Kyoto in 1879. A carefully selected blend of teas, including Tencha and Gyokuro, have been added to the botanical recipe (Hinoki cypress, yuzu and juniper, among others) which imparts an intense aroma and depth of flavour.
